Exemplary Online Courses

Polk State College strives to provide exemplary online courses. Our efforts align with the State of Florida’s initiative to “create a culture of quality for online education by recognizing the development of high-quality online education statewide.” This site showcases courses that have earned one of the two designations described below. Learning Technology encourages continuous improvement for faculty to integrate technology with pedagogy to empower students to master learning outcomes and achieve success.

Quality Designation Process

Courses that meet the criteria for quality course design as specified in the Polk State College Quality Online Course Rubric will be awarded a badge of “Quality”, visible on the course homepage and or syllabus. Our rubric aligns with the 22 essential standards found in the Quality Matters rubric 7th Ed. for Higher Education, the Polk State College Student Perception of Instruction survey, and the Faculty Online Observation Form.

Requirements:

  • Participation in Polk State College’s Quality Online Course Design Seminar, an asynchronous course facilitated by Instructional Designers.
  • Completion of a faculty self-assessment using the Quality Online Course Rubric.
  • Two peer reviews conducted by certified Quality Matters reviewers.
  • A final earned score of 85% or higher.

High-Quality Designation Process

Courses that meet the criteria for high-quality course design follow the Quality Matters rubric 7th ed. for Higher Education. Polk State College has been using the Quality Matters rubric for the guidance of best practices for instructional design since 2011. For a course to be nationally recognized by Quality Matters, it must go through a rigorous faculty peer review process and meet all essential standards in the Quality Matters rubric. All nationally-recognized QM courses are featured on the official Quality Matters website.

Requirements:

  • Participation in APPQMR or DYOC course facilitated through QM.
  • Course must be taught a minimum of two semesters with students prior to certification.
  • One internal peer review conducted by a certified Quality Matters reviewer.
  • An official QM review (includes 1 master reviewer, 1 peer reviewer, and 1 subject matter expert.)
  • A score of 86 of out 101 must be achieved and all 22 essential standards must be met.
